Scott and Charlene, two iconic Neighbours characters, may make a long-awaited return in the final episodes of the cancelled serial.
According to rumours, executives have a wish list of big-name former stars and hope Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will be on it.
Their characters last appeared on the show more than three decades ago, although Jason’s real-life daughter Jemma Robinson presently plays Harlow Robinson on the show.
According to the Birmingham Mail, a source told the Sun newspaper, “Bosses have spoken to Jason, who has agreed to return in theory.”
“Kylie has always been a tremendous fan of the show; they’re just waiting for a response.”
“Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 after this summer,” a representative for the channel said.
“We’d like to congratulate the cast, Fremantle, and the entire production crew for their excellent work on this landmark series, which has been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade.”
“Of course, we’d like to thank the fans for their unwavering support of Neighbours over the years.”
“We understand that this decision will cause sadness, but our present focus is on boosting our investment in original UK drama, which has a great appeal for our audiences.”
Neighbours first aired on BBC One before moving to Channel 5 in 2008.
Scott and Charlene’s wedding in 1987 drew 20 million viewers in the United Kingdom, and the characters left Erinsborough in 1988 for a new life in Brisbane.
