Neighbours confirms Christmas break – here’s when the soap goes off air

Digital Spy has confirmed that Neighbours will take another Christmas break this year.

On Friday, December 10 at 1pm and 6pm, the Australian soap will show its final episode of the year on Channel 5.

On Monday, January 3, Neighbours returns for the new year, which means the programme will be off our screens for a total of three weeks.

Over the last few months, the UK broadcasts of Neighbours have been catching up to the Australian broadcasts.

The UK was four weeks behind Australia at the start of the year, but the gap has steadily narrowed as 10 Peach reduced the programme to four episodes each week. Five has been shown on Channel 5.

The end-of-year finale will air in Australia on Thursday, December 9 — only one day before it airs in the UK, according to Digital Spy.

Neighbours will then spend a three-week Christmas holiday in Australia before returning on January 3, ensuring that the UK is not left behind once more.

Fans should expect a cliffhanger to conclude the year in spectacular fashion. Spoilers for the finale will be announced closer to the time.

Neighbours took a shorter hiatus in 2020, disappearing from Channel 5 screens for a week and a half around Christmas. The programme didn’t take a pause in Australia at all.

After Channel 5 marketed all-year-round broadcasts for the show, Neighbours ran continuously during the festive season in 2018 and 2019, even on Christmas Day. This agreement looks to have come to an end.

Away from Soapland, Channel 5’s Home and Away will be on a six-week sabbatical, with the UK finale set for Monday, November 22 at 12.30pm.

The season finale of Home and Away will air on Channel 7 in Australia on Thursday, November 25 at 7 p.m.
