Neighbours legend Anne Charleston says classic episode was “rock bottom” for show

Anne Charleston, a long-time fan of Neighbours, has reminisced on her recollections of the show, joking that one specific (adorably goofy) episode was “rock bottom” for the show.

In the wake of the Australian show’s cancellation, the Madge Bishop actress reflected on her memories of the show, admitting she was “sad.”

The subject of the iconic Bouncer dream scene came up during an interview with Studio 10 with on-screen husband Ian Smith – aka Harold Bishop.

In case you missed it, in 1990, the soap aired a scene in which the adorable labrador retriever dreamed of marrying collie Rosie and having puppies with her. Yup.

Anne expressed her displeasure with the bizarre episode, saying she “cried” and that the serial was “truly hitting rock bottom.”

She laughed, “It was a disgrace because he was such a gorgeous puppy.” “He didn’t deserve such an outburst!”

Anne and Ian both commented on the show’s cancellation, with the former saying: “I mean, it’s been 36 or 37 years, which is an all-time high in this nation. Still, I believe it had a few excellent years left in it.”

Ian said, ” “I mean, a lot of people use soap to hang a well-known commodity. That is something I would never do. For me, it did far too much. It ensured that I was well cared for during my senior years. Isn’t it true that it cared after both of us?”

Anne said, “It most certainly did.” “It opened doors that would never have been opened otherwise.”

Last month, Channel 5 announced that the soap would cease broadcasting in August, with the serial likely to finish unless a new home is found.

Since then, several campaigns to save the soap have been established, and a number of stars have spoken out about the tragic news.
