Meet the Australian Gangster cast and their real-life criminal inspirations

Channel 7’s new series Australian Gangster takes viewers on a frenetic trip that represents the current criminal world, and it’s the latest crime series to take Australia by storm.

Australian Gangster is a fast-paced, punchy, and often hilarious miniseries that takes us inside Sydney’s world of crime and gangland conflicts.

It is around Pasquale ‘Pas’ Barbaro, portrayed by Alexander Bertrand, who grew up in a criminal family and has never had a chance at a regular life.

Before being released from prison, Pas makes an enemy of Mohammed ‘Little Crazy’ Hamzy, played by Rahel Romahn, a fellow convict and Brother for Life member, and we see what happens as he adjusts to life as a newly liberated man.

We meet more individuals as the miniseries progresses, and here we look at the major cast and the real-life persons who inspired their characters.

Alexander Bertrand

Alexander Bertrand, who played Constable Dave in the 2016 spin-off Home and Away: Revenge, may be familiar to die-hard Home and Away fans.

The 31-year-old has also starred in a number of critically praised films and television shows, including Les Norton and The Warriors.

Alexander plays real-life criminal figure Pasquale ‘Pas’ Barbaro in the upcoming crime thriller Australian Gangster.

Pasquale Barbaro

Pasquale Barbaro was a well-known Sydney criminal known to both the police and the criminal underworld.

Pasquale was described by the Sydney Morning Herald as a “heavily tattooed, muscled, and flashy dresser,” as well as a “Instagangster,” a word used to describe his love of sharing photos of himself and his fast vehicles on social media.

Pasquale’s illicit high life came to an end in 2016 when he was shot dead in Earlwood, Sydney’s inner west, at the age of 35.

According to the ABC, Pasquale’s family has known ties to the Calabrian mafia in Italy, and the targeted shooting was one of several in Sydney that year.

Louisa Mignone

Louisa Migone is an actress and writer from Australia who has appeared in films such as Infini, Pandemic, and Danger 5.

In the miniseries, she portrays Pasquale’s wife, Melinda Barbaro, who is also the mother of his children.

Melinda Barbaro

In real life, Pasquale’s ex-wife Melinda Barbaro recently opened up about her ex-dedication husband’s to God and how he would decorate his home with religious sculptures in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

“Yes, he liked his Versace shirts and Rolexes,” the 36-year-old told the newspaper in 2016. “But he went to church to pray and was passionately devoted and protective to me and our children.”

She also said how they “always read the bible to the children at night” and how Pasquale had changed since his release from jail in 2013.

Rahel Romahn

Rahel Romahn is one of the more well-known performers on this cast list, having been nominated for AACTA and Logie awards for his performance in The Principal.

He’s been in a number of Australian and American films and television programmes over the years, and his newest part in Australian Gangster is just the most recent example of his versatility.

Rahel plays Mohammed Hamzy, often known as ‘Little Crazy,’ a figure based on a member of the Brothers for Life gang.

Mohammed Hamzy

Mohammed Hamzy is the cousin of Brothers for Life gang founder Bassam Hamzy, one of Sydney’s most violent inmates.

Mohammed was convicted of manslaughter in 2016 for two shootings that occurred in 2012. He is presently serving slightly over eight years in jail.

Brothers for Life, commonly known as Brothers 4 Life or BFL, was a Middle Eastern criminal organisation that was active in Sydney’s south-western suburbs.

Steve Bastoni

The Emmy Award-winning On the Beach, Matrix Reloaded, and the Water Diviner are just a few of actor Steve Bastoni’s outstanding achievements.

He is well recognised for his roles in Police Rescue as Constable Yannis ‘Angel’ Angelopoulos and Neighbours as Steve Parker.

Steve plays Pasquale’s villainous father, Giuseppe ‘Joe’ Barbaro, in this new crime drama.

Giuseppe Barbaro

Giuseppe ‘Joe’ Barbaro, Pasquale’s father, was just as renowned as his son, and the two were both imprisoned in 2005 after Joe was sentenced to six years in prison for running an interstate amphetamine ring with his son.

Zaky Mallah, who was in jail at the same time as the father-son combo, characterised them as “very very close.”

“I recall Joe standing at the pod 10 gate, waiting for his kid to come “In 2016, Zakey told news.com.au. ” At the gate, I recall them hugging and kissing each other.”

7Plus now has Australian Gangster accessible to watch.
